RL Gaming vs. Online Gaming

So I tried it. I used Minecraft as a mapping tool and kept up with players stats but to be honest, and maybe this is just my experience, it's really difficult to teach new players how to play D&D through Xbox live. Especially 3.5e. So it fizzled out. The thing is, they loved it. But I think for them it was just another Minecraft mini game, albeit a complicated one.

After this failed experiment, two things happened. I discovered that my FLGS had opened a new branch with a dedicated gaming room. And I was able to get car insurance so that I could drive there! Whoop!

Now feeling determined, I gathered together some friends that I hadn't seen in forever and began my reign...ahem I mean experience as a DM. I finally took a good look and decided to go through 5th edition with my group. The first meeting was last week and we did some character creation while I tried desperate to understand everything about 5th edition and even some things that I'd never discovered all the way back on 3.5. When I was a player, I only needed to know the rules for my character. So now, I've realized just how little I know if the rules. And I'd walked into my battle with little more than leather armor and a wooden sword...

But even so, using the wizards basic rules and a borrowed players handbook, we got some characters up and running and played through the adventure hook for Lost Mines Of Phandelver. I think it went well for being only my second time dming. My first was...really just not worth mentioning at this time.

So yeah, I had fun and I look forward to this group becoming a really awesome weekly DnD group.
